Soutron Launches eCommerce Module

International library transformation company Soutron Global announces a new eCommerce module to integrate the ever growing Soutron Library and Knowledge Management system with PayPal™. Many professional institutes, associations and organizations manage a variety of content (physical and/or electronic) and are seeking ways to generate income using eCommerce tools.

Soutron makes it easier for visitors to a web site to find materials and for content managers to link related materials. Content can be dynamically published through a conventional OPAC or into a web site to increase income-generating opportunities.

A shopping basket allows a user or member to select items. Related items can suggest comparative items to purchase. A checkout function allows items to be purchased in a single transaction simply and quickly. The total cost is calculated according to the quantity of each item needed, the type of user e.g. student, corporate member etc. Any other rule based criteria for price calculation can be introduced and the price is calculated in a currency appropriate to the location of the user. The transaction is then seamlessly passed to PayPal™ for purchasing through a registered PayPal™ account and funds transferred to the organization's bank account.

Soutron can integrate with a variety of fulfilment processes based on either physical despatch or electronic downloads.

Soutron has developed this added functionality to integrate with their Soutron Library and Knowledge Management System that will be available to clients as an optional module for release in September 2012.

The New Knowledge Services: Merging Knowledge Management and Librarianship

 

Specialist Librarian Career Planning Roundtable Results

San Diego, CA

At roundtable discussions recently hosted by Soutron Global in New York and Toronto, international library transformation company Soutron Global guest speaker, and Consulting Specialist for Knowledge Strategy, Guy St. Clair examined enterprise intellectual capital management and the emerging role of librarians as the enterprise’s intellectual capital thought leader.

According to St. Clair’s resulting blog posting on Positioning Specialist Librarians for KM, specialist librarians are now expected to function as knowledge thought leaders, both in developing organizational knowledge strategy and in building (or re-shaping, if it already exists) the company as a knowledge culture. And the challenge with this concept is that knowledge services can’t be delivered using the same institutional/corporate frameworks that have traditionally been used.

St. Clair further contends that successful knowledge management is about the knowledge-seeker (aka audience or customer) and argues that libraries must be transformed in order to meet management intellectual capital management expectations. In order to meet that expectation, he identifies four requirements:

  • Senior management must recognize the value of information, knowledge, and strategic learning to corporate success
  • The specialized library (or other knowledge-focused operational function) must be transitioned into the organization’s strategic knowledge function
  • The specialist librarian – or other knowledge professional – must transition into the company’s strategic knowledge professional
  • Knowledge thought leaders must provide access to KM/knowledge services tools that support enterprise-wide intellectual capital transfer
