The New Knowledge Services: Merging Knowledge Management and Librarianship

Specialist Librarian Career Planning Roundtable Results

San Diego, CA

At roundtable discussions recently hosted by Soutron Global in New York and Toronto, international library transformation company Soutron Global guest speaker, and Consulting Specialist for Knowledge Strategy, Guy St. Clair examined enterprise intellectual capital management and the emerging role of librarians as the enterprise’s intellectual capital thought leader.

According to St. Clair’s resulting blog posting on Positioning Specialist Librarians for KM, specialist librarians are now expected to function as knowledge thought leaders, both in developing organizational knowledge strategy and in building (or re-shaping, if it already exists) the company as a knowledge culture. And the challenge with this concept is that knowledge services can’t be delivered using the same institutional/corporate frameworks that have traditionally been used.

St. Clair further contends that successful knowledge management is about the knowledge-seeker (aka audience or customer) and argues that libraries must be transformed in order to meet management intellectual capital management expectations. In order to meet that expectation, he identifies four requirements:

  • Senior management must recognize the value of information, knowledge, and strategic learning to corporate success
  • The specialized library (or other knowledge-focused operational function) must be transitioned into the organization’s strategic knowledge function
  • The specialist librarian – or other knowledge professional – must transition into the company’s strategic knowledge professional
  • Knowledge thought leaders must provide access to KM/knowledge services tools that support enterprise-wide intellectual capital transfer

Royal Canadian Military Institute (RCMI) Transforms Library Information Access with Soutron Global

Canada's Largest Privately-held Military Library Formerly Used Inmagic

San Diego, CA - April 11, 2012

International library transformation company Soutron Global announces that the Royal Canadian Military Institute (RCMI), Canada’s largest privately-held military library, has completed their conversion to Soutron Global from Inmagic. RCMI is based in Toronto, Canada.

The 15,000 volume RCMI Research Library holdings include significant books detailing Canada's military history, including digitized historical archives from the 17th century. The library’s wide range of subject matter encompasses: Army, Navy, Air Force, training and equipment, tactics and strategy, uniforms, medals, war art and poetry. The RCMI permits a detailed study of subjects not readily found elsewhere.

Librarian Penny Lipman, B.A., MLS, needed an efficient solution which could accommodate not only the books in the RCMI collection, but also one that could seamlessly evolve to incorporate photographs and archival material. Additionally, she required a system that securely provides a web-based searchable catalog with basic “Guest” gateway access and a “Login” for exclusive member-only feature access. Since transforming the library catalog with the use of book covers, self-issue, along with reviews and ratings capabilities, Penny is particularly impressed by "the Library of Congress auto-cataloging feature [which] is an invaluable help with the backlog, to lighten the load on a solo librarian."

Founded in 1890, the RCMI included "the promotion of Military Art, Science and Literature" in its mission. A core element of the Institute's activities is the field of "Defense Studies," particularly on issues related to Canadian Military Heritage and Contemporary Canadian Security.

Soutron Global upholds the RCMI's mission by providing an informal social knowledge-based network for discussions related to matters of "security and defense." Specifically, its social knowledge-based network enables public and private users of the RCMI library the ability to comment on and rate materials, thus keeping the spirit and traditions of RCMI moving forward.

"I am delighted to be able provide RCMI a secure, state-of-the-art library and knowledge management solution that delivers access to not only their historic possessions, but also provides RCMI members with an enhanced Social Knowledge Network," states Tony Saadat, President and CEO of Soutron Global.

The Salvation Army Archives Canada and Bermuda Selects Soutron Global

Digital “War Cry” Historical Collection Available for Public Viewing Online

San Diego, CA

International library transformation company Soutron Global announces the implementation of Soutron Global within the Salvation Army Archives of Canada and Bermuda to manage their historical digital assets, The War Crys publication. The collection is located in the Salvation Army Toronto office and made available for public viewing via the Soutron Global discovery portal.

The Salvation Army of Canada and Bermuda is the largest non-government direct provider of social services in Canada, and recently converted from an older Inmagic application to the multi-lingual Soutron Global library and information system. Built into the core of all Soutron Global products is the capability to easily and flexibly manage digital assets. Materials can be manually indexed for access and linked to records while remaining within a corporate file system. Content can also be digitized, extracted from an electronic source, captured as XML and loaded as a structured record.

"The Salvation Army Archives, Canada and Bermuda is pleased to partner with Soutron Global in the management and distribution of its on-line heritage War Crys," states Colonel John Carew, Director of The Salvation Army Archives Canada and Bermuda Territory. The first edition of The War Cry was printed on December 27, 1879 in London, England by General William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, and continues to be the official news publication of the Salvation Army today.

"Historical materials that are not digitized risk being neglected and lost to potential future users," states Tony Saadat, President & CEO, Soutron Global. "As electronic tools have become the main tool for information and knowledge discovery, items not catalogued have the potential to disappear from the public’s collective cultural memory, creating a history riddled with holes. I am delighted our solution can help the Salvation Army record, exploit, and digitize such valuable history."

Soutron Global helps organizations increase knowledge retention and enhance business performance by rapidly sharing experience and best practices across businesses or organizations. Organizing and extracting value from knowledge assets has become a critically important function, as has the ability of users to add value to that knowledge via reviews, ratings, and more.

Global Design Company, Fossil Inc., Selects Soutron Global for Digital Asset Management (DAM)

Diverse Creative Assets for Fashion/Design Firm Managed by Cutting-Edge ILS

San Diego, CA

International library transformation company Soutron Global announces that Fossil Inc., a global fashion and design company whose brands are sold in 90 countries worldwide, has selected Soutron Global to transform their library, by cataloging information assets alongside their diverse creative design items. Fossil is located in Richardson, TX.

Innovative design and development lies at the heart of Fossil’s success, and Fossil needed an integrated library solution (ILS) that would manage and provide easy access to both their fashion design books and creative materials ranging from audio-visual items to vintage ephemera consisting of thousands of bag, fabric, and leather samples.

Brand Archivist Laura Pike-Seeley needed a single system to manage all of these different types of materials, a functional ILS to accommodate non-MARC records, and the facility to display their digital design assets in search results in a gallery view of horizontal rows.

As Pike-Seeley evaluated the available ILS and DAM solutions, she needed to take both library and creative needs into consideration. “Fossil is a fashion/design company, and its library must appeal to creative, artistic people. The look and functionality of Soutron’s OPAC answers this need,” states Pike-Seeley. "And because Soutron’s system is newer than the others I considered, it will be more responsive to OPAC development trends."

The capability to manage digital assets is built into the core of Soutron Global to provide an extremely flexible system for storing digital materials. Each type of digital content can be described to the system with a quick and simply defined record structure - without any need for IT support. Fields can be defined and added at any time, allowing meta-data specific to the digital asset to be recorded and assigned as needed.

According to Soutron Global President and CEO Tony Saadat, "The challenges of maintaining contemporary library or information center collections created from ephemera has become increasingly acute. I'm proud that Fossil chose our comprehensive library automation solution for their digital asset management (DAM) due to its flexibility, ease of customization, and ease-of-use."
